so a lot of stuff happened today. not really here in texas, but in virtual lakeville for the most part. it's all kinda a blur now, but i'll try to recount it.
i woke up much too early, about 730 with my pager going off. no emergency, just daniel waking me up. nothing terribly exciting for a couple of hours. at one point daniel tells me he can't get to the web page that monitors li's modem pool, and that seemed like a bad sign. turned out discovernet's whole web site was down, and our server was fine.
went back about my business. half an hour later daniel sends me a link to dnet's web site. simultaneously our server goes down. (i was on the phone with my mom during this bit, as she's in the process of switching over to a new isp.) this website is nothing but a splash screen. some new company name. text that says coming soon. my first thought, and daniel's, is that dnet's been bought out, and this is why they've been stringing us along for the last couple of weeks. now that it's happened, they've cut our server.
about this point the muscle in the back of my left leg begins cramping up. really painful. my guess would be stress manifesting itself physically. i can't sit, stand, or lie down comfortably.
then i notice the url that daniel pointed me to. he's got a dot com in there instead of a dot net. but the server's still down. daniel says he's on the phone with dnet, they didn't shut us off, they're working on getting carrot back online. but it's not coming up. they need the root password. now i'm getting a little suspicious about all this, but really, what choice do we have?
so the server comes back up, i go back about my business. daniel now having finally talked to dnet gets back to the letter that we're planning on sending out to all our customers. i wrote the first draft last week, it's been hacked and edited a bunch of times since then. he's about to send it on to dnet for their okay, and says to me that dnet just sent out their own letter.
they took it upon themselves to mail all of our customers (the paranoid in me says this is why they wanted access to our server and they manufactured the whole "crash" to this end, but i might be judging them a little too harshly) saying that they are pulling the plug on us, li is going out of business, and all customers should sign up with them before the 18th.
i guess it took a lot of the pressure off of us, all of a sudden the ball is no longer in our court. we did re-compose our own letter and mail it to all our dialup clients. and there's already been some supportive responses. sorry to see li go, but good luck in the future sort of things.
it's not over yet of course. there's still the moving of client websites off of carrot. getting mail forwarding services set up elsewhere. collecting past due balances, refunding pre-paid balances. squaring away debts. all that kinda stuff. and of course the big question, what to do with my own sites, my servers, my life now that this is all really winding down for good.
and it's friday night again, just shy of midnight. i've got playwriting first things tomorrow and guess what.. another week has gone by. and i promised to read the start of my play in class tomorrow. gotta write something.
