got up way early for the boston trip. including me, only four people from our house went. the first stop of the official itinerary was the museum of fine arts, which we had done two weeks ago, so we decided just to wander around boston.
on the way to the t we met up with noy, who had spent the previous night in boston and was coming the opposite way to join the risd group. we hijacked her, as she vaguely knows her way around boston, and set off.
we did some shopping on newbury street. i bought some real cheap on sale t-shirts at urban outfitters. and we went to niketown, almost a religious moment for leo. esthetically the store is really cool, but on the whole corporate/capitalist level it kinda disturbs me.
as we were leaving i ran into robert (from li) and his girlfriend. we just both happened to be in boston. small world.
we had thai food for lunch, then took the t to cambridge and wandered around there for a while. primarily looking for the harvard graduate school of design, to which noy lead us on something of a wild goose chase through the steaming streets. and it turned out to be locked. but i didn't really mind the whole adventure.
we played in a fountain and then headed to quincy market, where we were s'posed to meet the risd bus to the fireworks. i had some indian food as sorta a second lunch/early dinner, and then we hung out for a bit.
the bus ride to the fireworks was hot and unpleasant and the bus driver was pulling all sorts of illegal u-turns and such, and there was no parking. we ended up parked near the christian scientist world headquarters (some cool architecture) and walking to the mass ave bridge, which was closed to traffic for fireworks viewing.
the fireworks were probably the best i've ever seen. we were too far away to hear the boston pops, but they were playing cliched things like the 1812 overture, so really that was no big deal.
we didn't get back until after one, and i sat in the lounge and dug back into 2d.
