saw chris.k at dinner. looks like someone beat us to the flat that we had decided on. so it's back to searching.
earlier, we had crits in studio in groups of three. i noticed all kinds of little things in other people's projects that i wish that i had thought of. and when that happens i feel less interested in my ideas and start thinking about scrapping them entirely in favour of something new. but it was that continual clearing and starting over that was probably the largest factor to the downfall of my final project last semester. in other words i have to just choose a path and stick with it.
at lunchtime there was a lecture by the last finalist for the new full-time faculty position in the architecture department. he seemed to me to be the most enthusiastic about teaching, with the most experience. and he wants to teach at risd for the same reason that i chose to come to school here: architecture at an art school. and he wants to leave his current position at the gsd to come here.
later, there was a petition floating around the building to extend the new faculty search from five finalists to ten. there seemed to be strong feelings that people didn't really like any of the five. i think i'd really enjoy taking a studio with kelly, who lectured today, if only because he really projects his enthusiasm.
after dinner there was another lecture, on the work of heikkinen and komonen, one of the four firms under consideration for the new risd central block project. (the one firm that i hadn't heard of, the other three being rem koolhaas's oma, steven holl, and rafael moneo.) and it was interesting. some of their work is nice.
a couple of hours working on my shade and shadow model for drawing class. then home to bed.
