field trip friday. we went to another etruscan museum, a ways outside of rome, and two actual etruscan archeological sites, necropoli. the first, tarquinia, wasn't all that special for the tombs themselves, but the surrounding countryside (it was on top of a large hill) was beautiful, slightly chilly, windy, but a bright blue sky. i suppose the tombs might have been more interesting for someone who was really into ancient frescos or whatnot, but architecturally most of them weren't all that different from one another.
the second site though, cerveteri, was amazing. the tombs were large mounds, carved into the soft volcanic stone ground, then built upon, and covered in earth. it truly was like a little city of these semi-underground houses. we weren't supposed to bring cameras in, but after missing out on panoramic pictures in the morning i snuck mine in anyway, and i'm glad i did. i took a whole roll of photos in and among the tombs. and i really would like to go back and study them some more.
back in rome i worked in studio for a while. until i ran out of fancy paper, which wasn't exactly all that long, as i only had two sheets left. it's back off to the art supply store tomorrow. and then read a bit, waiting for all the noisy people to go out and do their extroverted, social friday night things.
