field trip to ostia antica today. in ancient times it was rome's seaport. but unlike rome, it wasn't inhabited beyond the existence of the empire, and fell into disuse and was buried by the regular floodings of the tiber. it has been excavated and is now a museum (albeit small city-sized) giving at least a footprint of what life was like in those times, unadulterated by future generations of inhabitants. it's really pretty neat. and not too super packed with tourists and not to stuffy-museumy, you can still explore a lot of it on yr own.

one more thing on my list of places that would be kind of neat to go back to.

all sorts of people left the cenci for the weekend, and so it was really quiet here tonight. a few of us who were around had dinner and sat in the kitchen forever.

later i called the boys as they were preparing for the artist ball. the theme was wear garth's clothes, although form the sound of things chris.k was probably going to be pretty close to naked. it was nice to talk with them, i kind of wish i could have been there for the craziness.

tried to call stef again too, but her phone's still dead.
