Guest appearance.
16 April 2005
Getting to the East Village for brunch with Chris was a painful ordeal. The knee. But largely the ankle. Taking steps slowly, one at a time. Limping along the sidewalk. Stepping oh so carefully on to and off of curbs.
After brunch, not wanting to just get back on the subway and head home because it was such a sunny day, and knowing that if I went home, I probably wouldn't feel up to hobbling back out again, it was fortuitous that Chris got a call from Julia who was lounging in Prospect Park.
It was a bit of a trek out there, two subways and a bit of walking, and the day wasn't quite as warm as it had been forecasted to be, but lying in the sun for a while was nice.
From the park, out to Julia's apartment in Astoria, where she did drawings of Chris and me sitting around drinking beer and playing guitar. I like making guest appearances in other people's art. Garth and I were talking about that the other day before he left for Chicago, he's referenced in at least two published works. 'And appear in a number of the daypix on my website,' I reminded him. (That's his hand holding the black market camel on Monday. Which Julia bought for him, to come full circle.)
Dinner at a Japanese restaurant. For only the second time since I've been in New York, I think. Not a particularly large selection of vegetarian sushi, I've yet to find or hear of anywhere here with the options of Tokyo in Providence or Bizen in Great Barrington, but what I had was good, and they did do a few interesting rolls on the vegetarian sampler entree that Chris got.
And a birthday party for Julia and Jessie's friend Rachael from high school. Which, although I had decided not to drink any more tonight, and am always a bit awkward when surrounded by people who I mostly don't know, was fun. I heard from Rachael's roommate Annie that the M60 bus might be a more direct route from Astoria to upper Manhattan, but decided not to try it for the first time at 2AM, and so made the late, long trip home by subway.
