As Chris would say.
4 June 2005
Brunch with Chris at Josie's on the Upper West Side. Something different for a change, although I still had what basically amounted to a #1 with tofu. Wasn't bad, but nothing special either. The UWS is certainly a different face on New York though. My take, 'This is the same city that I live in?' Chris's, 'We're surrounded by Whitey.'
After brunch, 'The movie theatre down the street made me think that maybe today's the day to see the new Star Boners.' (Chris substitutes one word in the title of almost every movie he sees with the word 'boner'. While Revenge of the Boner is the obvious title for this specific film, I'd have to say Boner of the Sith is the better one.) And so, a few observations, which probably won't ruin anything for you, but feel free to skip the rest of this entry if you haven't seen it yet and care about such things:
First, at least that whole debacle is finally over. While I did think Episode III was better than the first two, it still didn't stand on its own as a complete film. In fact, the whole prequel trilogy doesn't add up to much more than eight or nine hours of superfluous backstory for the original films. None of the characters are particularly engaging or sympathetic. And the big climax of the film (and hence of all three) is two intercut battles between four characters who are all still alive twenty-five years later when Episode IV begins. How is that climactic?
As an architect, and specifically as an architect interested in urban design, world building, mythology, and production design for film, I did find the design interesting. But that was about it.
Maybe somewhere down the road I'll watch the entire series over the course of a couple of days and like Lord of the Rings or Kill Bill it will work better as a whole than it did in parts. And I have to say that I am curious what George Lucas's original intention was for the concluding trilogy that he's now not planning on making. Mostly though, I'm just glad not to have the obligation of seeing another bad Star Wars film hanging over me.
