I must have spent close to four hours on the train.
3 September 2005
Chris calls at 10:15. 'I'm meeting Jen in Williamsburg at 11. She's flying out this afternoon.'
'That's not a heck of a lot of lead time, but I'm coming out. I'll get there when I can.' Which was right about noon, but they were still waiting for a table at a vegetarian place on Bedford for brunch. Ate. Talked.
Walking to the place that Jen had been staying to pick up her stuff, we passed Dave and Liza's new roommate George, who I hadn't met but Chris recognized. And then a block later Jessie and a friend of hers sitting in the sidewalk section of a restaurant for brunch.
Jen left, but said that she was planning on moving to New York for good when she's done with school next summer. On the way back we stopped and talked with Jessie for a bit, and she mentioned a rooftop party that she was going to tonight, and invited us along. Chris said he call her for the specifics later. And would call me and let me know. Then got on the subway.
I kicked around Williamsburg for a bit, picking up a couple of t-shirts at the American Apparel store. Largely so that I wouldn't have to do laundry today. But then headed home and did laundry anyway.
Watched some TV. Left a message on Chris's voicemail and then headed downtown. Got desert at Atlas. Sat in a park. Tried Chris again, still no answer.
I ran into Kate.S on the street while I was wondering around trying to think of something to do other than just head back uptown. We talked. Got a beer in a noisy bar and tried to talk some more. I think it may be the longest that Kate and I have ever talked, one on one. Even though we do have a whole lot of close friends in common, and have known eachother for years.
At midnight, with still no word from Chris, I headed home.
[ addendum: Apparently, Chris saw me sitting on the bench and waved. Then, as he was crossing the street I got up and walked away. I hadn't seen him, and was walking the other way because I had seen Kate. But he thought that it was an intentional slight towards him. I know that I can be bitchy sometimes, but for the record, I'm never that flat-out cold, to see you and get up and walk away. ]
