My mind: absent.
28 February 2011
As regards yesterday's post about being scattered, I locked my keys in my studio when I left last night. I realized this when I got home, reached into my jacket pocket, and found nothing but my earbud headphones. It would only be a few blocks back to the studio, but then I'd have to get a security guard to come up to the fifth floor to unlock my door. While contemplating whether or not this was worth it, predicated on the possibility of getting into my apartment (the doorbell is finicky under the best of circumstances), I heard some noise on the stairs inside and knocked. One of my roommates was headed out for a short walk and a smoke, so my keys could wait.
Also, my keys are not just my keys. They're clipped to my iPhone case. And there's a pocket on that case that's served as my wallet since my previous wallet was retired.1 And this was the second time this weekend that I locked my keys in my studio. The first time I realized before I hit the ground floor when I reached into my pocket looking for my phone (and the aforementioned earbuds). Before that I had never locked my keys in my studio. From time to time I've left them at home when leaving with a different jacket or bag or pair of pants than the one I had used the day before.2 I did leave them at my mom's house one Thanksgiving about 7 years ago.
Let's hope this isn't simply a symptom of getting older (or something worse), but only a temporary lull in my ability to keep on top of at least the most basic things.
1. [I didn't write the footnotes while I was writing this entry. If I had to say something relevant and footnotey now it would be:] I used said wallet as it got threadbare until one of the pockets detached along one side. Even then I wrapped a rubber band around it and continued to use it for a few months.
2. [And again:] Usually I realize this before I get too far. In my current apartment the door has to be locked from the outside, so there's no worry about being locked out this way unless I do get too far and then one of my roommates leaves and locks the door before I come back.
