okay, it's story time. i left er!n's (she told me i have to start spelling it that way) house in greenfield just after six. i was planning on stopping in northampton to fill the van up with gas, call sam to tell him to tape the season premier of the simpsons, and grab some food to go. just shy of the gas station i noticed that the van was overheating. i got gas, and also added a quart of oil and filled up the radiator reservoir, which i noticed was leaking. i called home and said if you don't hear from me by 930, i'm prolly stuck somewhere.
i got about a mile down the road and the low oil light started coming on. i pulled over and the water i had put in the radiator was almost totally gone, so i decided to find somewhere in northampton to park and figure out what to do from there. i went to the javanet cafe so that i could dig er!n's number out of my email and try to look up bret's which i didn't find, but i figured i could call his parents and ask.
i found a payphone and called bret's parents, and found out that he was there, but in the shower. i called home, told my mom what was up and that i was trying to figure out what to do. i called information and got ian and beth's number, since er!n was going there after i left, but she had gone grocery shopping and might be home by then, so i called her house but she wasn't.
i figured i couldn't do anything for a while, so i went to fire and water and got something to eat, and then found another payphone and called bret again. turns out he's moved back home, and was in the middle of dinner, but would come down when he was done. i called er!n's again, and she still wasn't home, but i left word that i had a ride and a place to stay. i called aaa, had them send a tow-truck, then called bret back and told him where i'd be.
went back, sat on top of the van, and the tow-truck came, and the driver said that with aaa-plus, i could actually have the car towed all the way back to connecticut. i figured if bret was already on his way i could still send van home and impose upon george to come pick me up tomorrow or something. i rushed back to the phone, called bret again, he hadn't left yet, so i told him not to worry, but i'd be coming back up in a couple of weeks and i'd visit.
when i got back to the tow-truck, the driver said, well actually it's $3 a mile over 100 miles, and i figured it might be pushing that, but now that i had told bret not to come i really had no choice, so we set off. ended up less than 100 miles tho. and so now i'm at li (it's closer to my regular mechanic) awaiting a ride the rest of the way home.
this summer is just not my season for automobiles.
maybe more on the first half of the weekend tomorrow.
