in 2d we critiqued the last couple of gouache projects, then had the rest of the day to work on our books. i printed all my photos and alternates. i bought some more double sided mylar for the text pages and a few choices for the photo pages and cover. i realized that my grommets weren't going to be big enough to bind the number of pages i had and started worrying about a new binding method. someone else in my class was using screw posts, which are kinda like threaded rivets. and the metcalf store had them, although no one knew how much they actually cost.
after dinner i went up to kinko's to photocopy everything onto the right sorts of paper. i had to cut the text pieces out and scotch tape them to another piece of paper that had registration marks on it. so that was kinda tedious. and then i copied the photos onto the final paper and wasn't happy with the way they were looking at all. but the laser printer paper was much too flimsy, so i resigned myself.
i also realized that none of the text registration marks were matching up with the photo registration marks, although they were all s'posed to be 4x6. so i took all the pages to the 2d studio, where there was a paper cutter, and cut them down two pages at a time to the correct size. and they came out pretty good for doing them all separately.
the next step was to punch holes for the screw post. i made a template and traced the holes onto the final pages and punched them six pages at a time. by the end my hands were shaking terribly and it was nearly impossible to punch the holes. but they all lined up okay.
then i cut a wrap around cover and punched holes in it. the cover stock was too heavy to photocopy onto, so i had to hand letter the title (which i wasn't completely happy with).
but despite all the little things, the book really ended up looking quite good. i'm really happy with it. (even if it did cost me about $100 to make.) and the second edition will be even better.
about midnight i went outside to fine a suitable location and do some more drawings. i found a well-lit parking lot, and sat down to work. i completely got into the groove. i kept working until i ran out of charcoal. i did 43 more drawings. i got to bed about 330.
