for materials and methods we're building a masonry wall. this morning was the first of two or three fridays. it was a bit of a logistical nightmare, there being something like 90 people in the class. we were split up into 15 teams, and there were three areas: mortar, demolition, and construction. the demolition was probably the most fun part. we did get to play with these big power chisels, but i have to say there's something very fulfilling about tearing apart a brick wall with yr bare hands.

afterward, at about 1130, i walked up to the met to eat lunch, to find jen, kris, and trevor eating breakfast (having just woken up). and i had to eat quickly, as there was a plaster modeling demo at noon back down at the beb.

for drawing we had to pick one of four small structures to use for our next big project. they were all basically shade-type structures: a porch, a bus shelter, a park pavilion, and a parking lot kiosk. of course we had to pick them without seeing them first. the bus shelter sounded good, but it's like a million years old, and is made of big, uneven stones and a complex roof.

it's okay though. it's just going to be a challenge. and we're working in teams, so i'm not in it alone. i can't help thinking that the parking lot kiosk might have been a better choice though. i'll have to check it out this weekend.

tonight's films courtesy of the risd film society were dreamchild and stranger than paradise. the first might have been a bit more disturbing (and hence effective) in a different setting. the second was a wonderfully beautiful movie.
