so tonight was the night that i stayed in providence over spring break for. ida at as220.
now, there's no good time to get a migraine headache, but just before an ida show has to be one of the worst times. i took some tylenol on my way out the door, not being able to remember if i had already taken some in the previous fifteen minutes. so i may have doubled the dose, but it still didn't do much good.
the walk down was a bit of a blur. there was a waterfire going on, and the smoke in the air didn't help matters at all. got to as220 about fifteen minutes before the show started, feeling dizzy and out of place.
i think that without the headache i would have enjoyed the first band, meridian 1520 (from providence, described as shoe-gaze for the new millennium). but, for the state that i was in, they were a bit too loud.
geoff farina (of the secret stars and karate) played next. just him and his guitar, so that was sorta soothing. i stood up to watch his and the next set, but stayed near a pole for balance.
and after him, 33.3. the best that i could describe them, live anyway, is like stereolab without the electronics or vocals. stand-up bass, cello, guitar, drums, and trumpet/trombone. normally i'm a little afraid of instrumental bands, but i really enjoyed them.
and ida couldn't be any less than beautiful. the crowd could have been more polite (they were really obnoxious during geoff farina's set), but i did my best to tune them out and get lost in the music. none of my super-favourites, but cool all the same.
and the music did help the headache some. i felt better at the end of the night than at the beginning.
today's soundtrack: ida, i know about you; ida, ten small paces; live show (see above); karate, karate.
