the phone rang at quarter of five (maybe) in the morning. at that hour you never really know what time it is, and so i thought it might really be six-something, and it might be for me, so i got up and rushed into the living room rather than letting the answering machine pick it up. it was for garth.

and as i had to get up around six, i didn't really sleep very well in the hour or so left to me.

A: "...and the passengers prayed: oh god, would you come down among us and save us from the destruction.

"and so it came to pass that god was among them, and there was much rejoicing.

"and the bus exploded into flames, killing them all."

B: "you can't do that! you can't kill god."

A: "i just did."

the purpose in getting up early was to head into nyc where i had my professional debut as a performance artist. or something. mary paula, my performance teacher from last wintersession has been curating a series of alternative dance/text performances at a small theatre in the city. she asked if i wanted to do one of the pieces that i had created last wintersession.

went and saw an exhibit at the jewish museum. the show was of what was in effect an autobiographical comic book written and painted by a young jewish woman, charlotte salomon, about her life before and during world war ii in germany and france. the words "comic book" or "graphic novel" were not used anywhere in relation to the exhibit but that's what it was. the story itself if quite moving.

then a few hours rehearsing my performance.

walked up to the main branch of the new york public library. it's such an overwhelming library. but a lot of people seemed to be rather content with using it.

and back to the theatre where i was performing. stopping along the way at what looked like it would be a quick place to get some indian food to go, only realizing after i had stepped through the door that i had been there before. a few years back at three or so in the morning after having gotten caught in traffic while trying to get back in nyc for dinner after a u2 concert to which i had won free tickets. and as then, for reheated, cafeteria style indian food, it was quite good.

went through the sound and light cues for my piece, now called "untitled (telephone piece I)", with the tech guys. then waited, getting more and more nervous. i wasn't all that happy with my performance, but i guess it was okay and it's hard to be at all objective about yrself. one of the other two people on the bill, claire porter, did three pieces that were really quite good.

and the drive back.
