i spent the entire morning looking at gold leaf halos in fourteenth and fifteenth century religious paintings. for the most part the figures really didn't interest me at all. occasionally i'd realize that i'd walked by a few dozen paintings without paying any more than a cursory glance at the painting itself. but the halos are amazing. i'm going to have to start putting them into my work.

some of the wear and degradation of the paintings was pretty cool too. that's harder to create, five hundred years of patina.

we spent the afternoon in volterra. and hour or so by bus from siena. (bus rides always cause me to miss stef even more, if that's possible.) more religious paintings and the etruscan museum. it was hard to get too into it though, since it was the end of the day and all.

back in siena for another night. dinner with sonia, alex.l, and jeff. then sitting in the campo again with some other risd kids. and back to the monastery/bed and breakfast that we're staying at.
