The commute was soundtracked with a surreal mix of Sufjan Stevens, El-P, and The Magnetic Fields. As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be any transparent logic governing the order of playback for songs on my new mp3 player.

I took the subway out to Home Depot after work with the more or less single minded purpose of buying a ladder for my loft bed. The old-fashioned wooden kind. Which is apparently something that no one in their right mind would want to buy, now that you can get aluminum and fiberglass ladders. Home Depot does not sell them. And I was looked at weird for even asking about them.

After a few minutes of wandering the store aimlessly, trying to figure out how I could partially salvage the trip, I did decide to get a 1' x 8' plank of MDF shelving to cover the 1' x 8' gap on the side of my bed. This was actually part of my plan from the beginning, although I was going to get a full sheet of MDF cut into four planks, and make shelves with the other three. But, as I was taking the subway home, I figured one plank would be unwieldy enough.
