'Hi Beatrice, it's Bean. I got your message, but unfortunately today is one of the only days in the last few weeks that I've committed to doing something else and I can't just come in on a moment's notice. I haven't really found anything else and have been hoping to hear from you, but today isn't good. If the work can wait until first thing tomorrow morning that would be great. If not, then I hope something else comes up. So give me a call back, and I'll talk to you soon.'
Of course today's other commitment was not a work commitment but a social one, and I know that everyone is going to tell me that I'm an idiot for following through with it, even though PDG finally called me in to do some work. But, in my defense, I still haven't had a conversation with anyone at PDG about exactly how much they're paying me for these short, no-notice jobs. And it really only would have added up to a couple of hours of work. And, if I keep just showing up under these conditions they'll keep stringing me along and taking advantage of me.
So even with that explanation, here's the point where you can start telling me how stupid I am. The aforementioned social commitment was to watch the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy with Marie. We had made plans to do it and I'm not going to apologize for following through with them.
