Almost everyone in New York is probably up on a rooftop tonight.
4 July 2005
There was a free concert in Battery Park this afternoon. Stephen Malkmus and Yo La Tengo. I took the train down, but there was a huge line to get into the actual concert area, and while I had friends inside, I didn't really want to wait on line by myself. Plus, you could hear the concert from almost anywhere in the park.
I sat down by the water and listened for a while. Walked around a bit. And then headed out to Dave.Z's where there was going to be a barbecue and fireworks watching from the roof.
Their landlord, who lives downstairs, was sitting out front when I got there, so the door wasn't locked and I just went up. They weren't home though, apparently, out at the supermarket, so I ended up laying in the hammock on the roof for a while, enjoying the beautiful end to the afternoon, waiting for them to get back.
Chris, true to form, disappeared before the fireworks even started without telling anyone that he was leaving.
It was a great view of the fireworks over the Manhattan skyline, but as soon as they ended I just took off too, not really having much reason to stick around. I didn't know two-thirds of the kids who had shown up, and Dave had lit a patch of roof tar on fire with the grill, and I wasn't terribly interested in eating anything that had been cooked in tar fumes.
