Since yesterday worked out pretty well, I decided to repeat the pattern for today. Brunch at the Organic Grill with the New York Times Magazine. Then with a choice between 2046 and Broken Flowers I went with the latter.

I may have gone into it was a little bit of prejudice against Bill Murray, as he has, in my opinion, played the same character in almost every movie he's been in since receiving 'serious' critical acclaim for Rushmore. Now, I've enjoyed most of those films, but having this nagging desire to see more range from an obviously talented actor. It has been suggested that I'm just mad at him for disavowing any interest in making Ghostbusters III. And actually, thinking back over his career (with the help of IMDB) many of his earlier roles might not have been as different in character, simply in energy expended.

I do have a few more specific complaints. Jim Jarmusch's trademark fades, which work so well in Stranger Than Paradise and felt heavy handed in Dead Man, seemed a little out of place in a film so much about colour, or at least a colour, pink, but I can forgive that. What I can't forgive is the opening credits, set in a distressed typewriter font, rather than actually typed on an old typewriter with its own personal character, since this too is a major theme in the movie.

All that said, I enjoyed it. I don't think it will stick with me forever, but it was a good way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
