May first. Once again, the beginning of a new month offers that tiny little kick towards making fresh starts and getting things on track. As of today, the last entry on magicbeans is dated exactly one month ago, itself written three weeks after the fact (and I believe actually encompassing a few different days worth of conversations). Once again, the intervening month offers no small number of things about which I want to write. A new computer, a flight in a hot air balloon, a girl, another girl, a handful of birthday parties. Hopefully over the next few days I'll find the time, motivation, and clarity of memory to look back and flesh out a few of them for posterity's sake.

Regarding the last one on that list, there was yet another today. Chris called at 8:00 this evening to tell me that some people were meeting for dinner for Christian's birthday. Christian just moved to New York from Portland, and is reprising his role as Chris's roommate, originally played at 438 the year I was in Rome. Dinner was at 9:00, and as it takes the better part of an hour for me to get anywhere that requires a subway transfer, I left my house minutes after the call. When I got off the train, however, there was a message rescheduling for 10:00.

My initial reaction to such things is to get upset, but, truthfully, it was probably for the best that I left my house when I did, since it's always easier to set out before it gets dark. I sat on a bench for a while. (Started composing this in my head.) People showed up. We ate, talked, had a few drinks, sung Happy Birthday, and dispersed. Relatively low-key on the scale of recent birthday parties, but then again, it is Monday night.
