Walk to Brooklyn. Twice.
6 May 2006
After brunch, as has sort of become the custom, Chris and I walked around lower Manhattan for a few hours. Stopped in to say hi to Marie at Digital Society. Sat in Washington Square Park for a bit. Ran into Rob on Broadway. At the Essex/Delancey subway station Chris said, 'This is where I get on the J. Are you going to take the F to the A?'
'Actually, since the A is running local all weekend, I'd rather figure out something else to do than go home, if there's any chance that I might be going out later this evening.'
'Well, Cora's making dinner. It won't be vegan. But you can come. Want to walk across the bridge?'
'I'd be up for that. It's still gorgeous out.' So we walked across the Williamsburg Bridge. Then took the J from Marcy to Myrtle. Stopped by Chris's house to pick up Christian. And headed over to Cora's.
And as it happened, she had made a stir-fry that actually was vegan, although I was more than prepared to just get drunk and then maybe stop by Life 983 for a veggie burger before leaving Brooklyn.
Despite being a Saturday night, things broke up pretty early. I got on the J with Dave, and for the second time in about as many weeks, decided to take a chance at transferring to the A at Fulton/Broadway-Nassau (he was going to take it one stop back into Brooklyn to Abi's). And, for the second time, it didn't work out, this time because the J stopped running at Chambers. 'The 6 might get us to the A,' Dave said. 'Or we could just get out and walk.'
'Walking sounds fine to me.'
And above ground with the Brooklyn Bridge looming, 'I might just walk over the bridge, although that doesn't really help you out.'
'I wouldn't mind walking over the bridge. It's still early, and I can just get on the A on the other side. Plus, I've never actually walked over the Brooklyn Bridge before even though I've been in New York for almost two and a half years.' So I walked into Brooklyn, again. And the Brooklyn Bridge is a pretty amazing landmark. Then got back on the subway, and home.
