Growing up.

7 November 2006

I quite literally kept myself up all night coughing. Until nearly 6:00 this morning, when I had finally just worn myself out and I got some sleep. A few hours later, my alarm clock went off and woke up my brain, but my head felt as if it was encased in granite.

About two and a half years ago I started using correct capitalisation. It was around the same time, although I can't pinpoint it quite as exactly, that I started wearing matched pairs of socks, rather than simply two of a roughly similar fabric thickness and ankle length. These were both, in a way, symbolic of the process of growing up. Of giving up silly things that I was really only doing out of an effort to be contrary.

Leading up to this year's election day (today), I've been questioning whether or not my long-standing stance against voting is actually rooted in a fundamental anarchist belief system, or if I'm simply being contrary. Certainly, nearly any candidate for national office who would get my vote would end up a distant third, at best. I maintain that the two party system does not leave room for representation of me or my political, social, or economic views. And I still very much intent to some day run for a House seat myself, in an effort to, at least, do a little something about that. But in the mean time, I'm beginning to think that I really should be voting locally, where my voice rings a tiny bit louder. Is that a sign of growing up? Or selling out?

Also on the growing up front, I'm finally buckling down and finding the money in my monthly budget (that inaccuracy of the word not withstanding) to sign up for a health insurance policy. I still believe that the insurance industry is one of the biggest scams out there. And I still feel that taking care of the health of its citizens is one of the primary duties of the government (ie, comprehensive national health care). But I also have to recognise the way things are and make sure that a hospital stay won't be something that would put my in debt for the rest of my life.
