driving up toward colorado i was thinking that i hadn't really been anywhere new on this trip. i'd never been in northeastern new mexico before though. it was nice. the red soil, green rolling hills. little evergreens as a darker shade dotting the landscape. and deserty canyon-like hills, mesas and whatnot. under the dark thunder clouds that were rolling in, it was all quite striking. there were discarded buildings here and there made out of red rocks. one in particular caught my eye. it was one room, about 10 feet square, four walls with open windows and a door, no ceiling, and a tree growing in the middle. i thought to myself: i could live here. at least for a while. before it started raining, it got dark and windy, and the air felt charged. with something more than lightning. there was a magical quality to it.
then the storm. thunderstorms are always cool. even if you have to drive in them. and then it started hailing. there was more than an inch of hail on the ground. it looked like snow.
and then the storm let up for a while. the mountains between new mexico and colorado are really beautiful too. and we continued on to denver. after driving around the city aimlessly for a couple of hours, we found a motel 6 (to stay in the renaissance hotel tonight would have been $100) but they were full, so we continued on to a super 8, which isn't cheap, but we have a microwave, and there are rabbits in the parking lot. city dwelling bunnies. that's pretty cool, 'cept i don't know why they'd want to live in the city.
in colorado springs, i started getting all the pages that had been waiting for me the last couple of days, including 10 pages from daniel this morning. starting at 750a eastern time. that was 550 in new mexico. even if i had pager service, i was sleeping. and so li's been on my mind and when i get into those loops, i feel lousy. bleh.
