i finally got a work-study job today. but i'm getting ahead of myself.
after classes this morning my drawing class team got some sandwiches and headed out to the stupid bus shelter. we took some vertical measurements, cleared up some horizontal measurements, and got more perplexed about the whole thing.
we came back to campus and swung by the metcalf store to pick up materials for design principles. i bought a big chunk of mahogany (i don't have to laminate layers together to create my starting mass, and it actually ended up cheaper than a sheet of mdf).
i decided to lug my chunk of mahogany up the hill so i could stop by the athenaeum and check on the status of my application. i checked my mail on the way, and there was a message from the residence life office that my dad had called. i figured he must not have my new phone number, and knowing that i probably wouldn't have any free time later in the day, i headed back to my room to call him.
he wasn't at home or work, but i left a message. then lugged my mahogany block back down the three flights of stairs and across campus to the athenaeum. turns out they already filled the positions the needed. so i went to the work study office to see what else there was i could be doing. there were a number of openings listed in the risd library (which was my first choice to begin with).
i headed back up the hill (with my mahogany block) to the library to look into these new developments. i filled out an application, talked with the woman who is in charge of the reference and circulation desks, and signed on for two evening shifts, starting tonight (i'll also be working sundays).
by now it was almost four, and i was finally lugging my mahogany block down to the beb, where i had meant to be headed with it to begin with. had my model shop safety class. left for dinner. called my dad again and talked for a little while. then started my library job.
it's actually pretty cool. i help people find stuff. retrieve rare old books, videos, and other things in the looked rooms. and basically just sit at the desk as an all-around helpful guy. and i get to do my homework while i'm not busy (like my reading), an added bonus.
and my first night went fairly smoothly. and i'm happy with the job. but i have to go down to the beb even earlier than usual tomorrow morning to spend some time in the model shop (with my trusty mahogany block) in order to make up for the time that i was planning on spending there tonight.
