Had a less than exciting dinner at an Italian restaurant in the East Village with people from work. We were looking for a place with food and beer, and although we were only two blocks from Life Cafe, which also has food and beer, and is much most vegan friendly, I'm never particularly pushy in that sort of situation.

Then to a bar where a friend of their's, Gabby Aparicio, was playing. Listened to the music, had a few more beers, and when she finished, I thought about leaving. 'I must be getting old,' I said to myself. 'I never leave early, unless I'm not drinking that night, and usually not even then.'

So I got another drink, and the next performer, Miki Huber, started, and I was transfixed. 'She sounds like the singer from Stereolab,' Mike said.

'Yeah, a little. She's got a beautiful voice.' There was another comparison that was on the tip of my tongue. Anna Waronker, from That Dog. And even more significantly, I realized after a few more songs, Julie Doiron.

Everyone else filtered out. I stayed for the rest of her set. Put my name on her mailing list. Bought a CD. And then, having stuck out against feeling old, headed home.
